A family shop for 30 years

Our story

From the van to the counter

It started with one angler, a van, and friends asking for tackle. Thirty years on, the counter is still open.

  1. 1994

    The van

Ian was the angler everyone noticed at the Pontinha. His friends asked, so he started bringing tackle over from the UK and selling it from his van.

  2. 1996

    The shop in Monte

Ian and Elda open "O Inglês" in their own home in Monte: hand-made sinkers, rods and reels repaired.

  3. 2008

    São Martinho

On Friday 13 June the shop opens in Rua do Engenho Velho. It looked risky. We are still here.

  4. 2015

    The licence

We start helping visitors get their fishing licence, right there in the shop.

  5. 2021

    Elda at the helm

Elda carries on at the helm, with the family.

  6. 2026

    30 years

Thirty years at the counter, a new float in the logo, and tools to fish Madeira better.

Why "O Inglês"?

To many Madeirans, Ian was always "o Inglês", the Englishman, the angler who brought tackle from the UK. The name stayed on the door.
